Drama!!! Mike DiPatri 4/21/12
Wow, what a day in Major League Baseball. I started watching the Yankees-Red Sox game. The Red Sox started out really pounding on the Yankees for six innings. But that’s only part of the story. The game was on Fox and the network kept talking about the White Sox-Mariners game where the White Sox pitcher was throwing a perfect game. The Red Sox had a 9-0 lead on the Yankees into the sixth, so thinking the Yankees were done for, I was hoping the network would break into the White Sox game to see if White Sox pitcher Philip Humber would finish the game. Well, they did in the ninth inning of that game. He got the first two outs pretty easily. The last batter went to a full count. Then the batter swung at and missed an outside pitch and the catcher missed it. The batter looked back to see the ball bounce free then started to run to first. The catcher picked up the ball and threw the batter out at first to complete the 21st perfect game in Major League history and the 3rd in White Sox history. The way it ended was really cool. At first I thought he walked him, but then I saw the catcher throw it to first. What an exciting way to end a game like that! One of the classiest things I’ve ever seen in the Majors followed that. The game was in Seattle. Even though he beat their team, the Mariners fans all gave Humber a standing ovation. I was really glad they broke away from the Yankees game. This perfect game was much more interesting. Especially since the Yankees were losing 9-1 when the network broke away. Now that’s that part of the story.
Here’s the rest of the story. After the White Sox game ended, the network went back to the Yankees-Red Sox game. It was in the 7th inning and the score was 9-5. What, 9-5? What happened? Well, I’ll tell you. Nick Swisher hit a grand slam. Then they put two on base with nobody out and Mark Teixeira came up. I was thinking that I hope he just gets a hit. Joe Buck was saying that he could make this a one-run game here. I thought that since he already hit a homer to give the Yankees their first run, it was not likely he’d hit another. He got hold of one and guess what —— it was a one-run game! The Yankees scored seven runs that inning to make it a 9-8 Red Sox lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Red Sox failed to score. Wait, you ain’t going to believe this. In the top of the eighth, the Yankees scored seven again. Swisher and Teixeira each hit two-run doubles. They each drove in six runs. So, the score at the end of eight was 15-9 Yankees. The Red Sox went through the last two innings without scoring ending the game with a 15-9 Yankees win.
Told you it was a really exciting day. You can’t script this stuff, but I’ll bet Fox was happy it was carrying today’s game. How many times do you see a pitcher pitch a perfect game in one game and another team overcome a nine-run deficit by scoring 15 un-answered runs to win the game? I started thinking that the Yankees did not get the word that today was my birthday. Somebody called them though in the seventh and let them know. They really found another gear after that. Well, that and the wheels fell off the Red Sox game. I could not believe that I was watching two such events in one afternoon.

Mike’s Take on Sports |

Philip Humber threw the third perfect game in White Sox history to start the most exciting day I’ve ever seen in Major League Baseball. |

Then the Teixeira-Swisher show started. Their twelve RBI fueled a comeback that overcame a nine-run deficit to beat the Red Sox in Fenway. That topped off today’s excitement. |
